Author Chat with Andy - Guest Author, Susan Mac Nicol

Susan Mac Nicol is today’s guest on ACwA. In the six years I’ve known Susan, she has proven to be unafraid to take risks with her books. Her contemporary romance Men of London series was my introduction to her works, but her Double Alchemy books were my favorites as I just can’t pass on a paranormal romance. She has toured with a circus to do research, written acclaimed screenplays for her books, and loves Adam Lambert and Benedict Cumberbatch. Talk about a child of the Renaissance.

Read on to learn more about Susan and books, and the leave a comment for a chance to win an ebook from her back list.

ACwA Guest: Susan Mac Nicol

  • Origin: How did the first story you ever wrote influence your career as an author and how do you feel about that story now?

I started writing round about ten years old, and one of the first stories I created was called The Green Menace. It was about this blob of green that invades a town and smothers people to death. I still have it.

I entered this short story into a youth school competition, and I won. It felt truly good to have my words recognised. I always knew I wanted to be an author, and my parents bought me first typewriter when I was 12. I wrote prolifically when I was in my early teens then the novelty wore off because – boys, parties and adulthood. When I came to the UK, I began writing again and the rest is history.

  • Which of your characters is most like you (or someone close to you)

There’s a female character called Cassie Wallace in my Starlight series who I modelled on myself. She’s more like me than anyone else in my books. I tend to give my characters traits that people I know have. Like Max from Flying Solo – he’s modelled on a good friend of mine and there’s a lot of ‘truth’ in this character that anyone who knows my friend would recognise.

  • What is your favorite trope and why?

Favourite trope is enemies to lovers. I love the concept of having two people in constant conflict with each other, to the point where it doesn’t look as if anything will work out. I enjoy the steady repartee, and the slow buildup of desire and acceptance between the characters.

  • How many half-written stories are on your hard-drive and what do you plan to do

with them?

Oh good gracious. My folder is full of them. To mention a few – a gothic horror MM romance; a cosy mystery story with an ex-female assassin playing detective; an angst ridden MM romance about survival guilt and an epic coming of age, adventure and save the world NA fantasy story I’ve been working on since I was sixteen. The fantasy story will be published under an alter ego S M Nicol.

I plan on writing them all at some time but it’s gonna take a while…

  • What are you working on next?

I have one standalone book – Edge — about a rock star in a compromising position that longs to break out and have a relationship with someone he can love, and then there are 3 books in a new series called Globetrotters, which is about a driven and tetchy TV host and his long suffering assistant, and their endeavours as they travel around the world producing their show in the most unusual of places. These are planned for 2021/start of 2022. After that, who knows which other WIP I’ll choose to write next.

Susan Mac Nicol’s Newest Release

For Fox Sake by Susan Mac Nicol

Former SAS soldier, Clay Mortimer, the M in M&W Investigations, had thought he’d seen it all. But when his ex calls and asks for a favour Clay is intrigued, and a bit surprised. He and his partner, Tate Williams, have a robust and imaginative sex life, but the things they see and learn in Fetish Alley take their understanding of human behaviour to the next level. Tate’s take is part kid in a candy store fascination, part shocked. At the end of the day, all good detective work requires an open mind and the skill to ferret out the truth. Still, the layers of deceit and avarice they encounter are more than par for the course, particularly from people who are not keen about outsiders to the world of Fetish Alley.

About Susan Mac Nicol

Susan Mac Nicol Author Photo

Susan writes steamy, sexy and fun contemporary romance stories, some suspenseful, some gritty and dark and hopefully always entertaining. She lives in her dream home, a cute, thatched cottage in the Essex UK countryside.

She’s also Editor in Chief at Divine Magazine, an online LGBTQ e-zine, and a member of The Society of Authors, the Writers Guild of Great Britain, and the Authors Guild in the US. Susan is also an award-winning script writer, with scripts based on two of her own published works. Sight Unseen has garnered no less than seven awards to date and her TV pilot, Reel Life, based on her debut novel, Cassandra by Starlight, was also a winner at the Oaxaca Film Fest.

She loves going to the theatre, live music concerts (especially if it’s her man crush Adam Lambert or the divine Cumberbatch) walks in the countryside, a good G and T, lazing away afternoons reading a good book, and watching re-runs of Silent Witness.
