Author Chat with Andy - Guest Author, Hayden Hall

Hey Readers!

Author Chat is really thrilled to have Hayden Hall come by today. Hayden is just starting on his publishing journey, and since I’m reasonably sure he’s going to take the MM Romance world by storm, I wanted to get to know him early in his career. His first book, One More Shot was released in December and his second book, One More Spin, was released yesterday. There is a lot to learn about Hayden, so read on to find out more.

After reading, be sure to leave a comment for a chance to win an eCopy of One More Shot.

ACwA guest: Hayden Hall

  • Origin: How did the first story you ever wrote influence your career as an author and how do you feel about that story now?

The first story I ever wrote has a lot in common with my novels. It had moderate angst throughout and a very happy ending. Of course, it was only about fifteen sentences long, and I was only seven years old. Don’t tell anyone, but I totally plagiarized a popular children’s author at the time.

The memory of writing it is very fond to me, mainly because I sat in a laundry basket with my notebook and wrote it in all caps. My teacher would have cringed. But I can tell you, that was the coziest way I’ve ever written something.

  • Which of your characters is most like you (or someone close to you?)

Interesting timing with this question. A lot of the early reviewers asked me if One More Spin was autobiographical and if the character of Holden Jones was me.

The answer is yes. Completely and utterly yes. Holden is defeated by life at the beginning of the book. He licks his wounds, feels sorry for himself for a while, and faces returning home to live with his father just when he should finally gain his independence. The relationship between him and his dad is strained by the fact that Holden is gay. However, Holden learns to take his life into his own hands and finds that he can build a family with the boy he loves.

That’s not too different from my own experience. I’ve had plenty of lows in my early adulthood, and my relationship with Dad is quite strained by the fact that I’m gay. This is not helped at all by me having to live in the same house with him after I’d already had a few tastes of independence (the pandemic really laughed at our plans). Plus, I insist that my husband-to-be stays right by my side no matter the protests and under-the-breath complaining.

I hope to be like Holden because he got up, brushed his knees, and made a life with Michael.

  • What is your favorite trope and why?

I’m a huge sucker for friends to lovers and gay for you. The first one is, of course, based in reality. There’s nothing quite as magical as falling in love with a friend and finding that the feeling is mutual.

Gay for you? Ah, that’s the age old trope in the gay community and I am not at all immune to it. Well, I am now; but the high school version of me was dreaming day and night about a straight friend turning gay because of the power of attraction and love.

  • How many half-written stories are on your hard-drive and what do you plan to do with them?

I dread to count!

If I were to give you an approximate, the best I can manage is to say they’re in dozens. I’m fond of a lot of different genres and a lot of different tropes. If you were brave enough to take a look at my hard-drive, you’d find everything from epic and urban fantasy, science fiction, novelizations of unknown musicals (does it even work in that direction or just the other way around?), heart-warming romances, to literary fiction and magical realism.

All of these made perfect sense to me back when I was tinkering on them.

As for what I plan to do with them… I will keep them. I can’t make myself delete any one of those, even if I know I’ll never work on them. Maybe, when I’m famous and gone, some of the descendants publish them and make a truck-load of money.

  • What are you working on next?

I’ve prepared a release schedule in my calendar so I can keep track of all my ideas in a somewhat coherent way. I’m currently writing One More Stop, a second chance romance set in the beautiful Italian countryside. Think Call Me By Your Name, but much happier and with a second chance in the mix.

This book should wrap up the series, or trilogy would be more appropriate. After that, we’re not quite leaving the world of these characters, but we’ll have a fresh set of tropes, and a whole new mood to work with.

One More Spin

One More Spin by Hayden Hall

I’m snowed in with my crush. What could go wrong?

Michael is funny, confident, and drop-dead gorgeous. He’s also straight. He made that clear five years ago when I kissed him.

It was the last time he spoke to me. It took a continent between us to calm my aching heart.

He danced back into my life now when nobody else could help me, offering a chance to be my friend again. Or is he offering more? Getting stuck in his mountain cabin is more than I can take.

The snow won’t chill the ache. If we don’t get out of here soon, I might just do something stupid.

He’s going out of his way to atone for the way he treated me and I feel my resolve breaking. I can’t always be the one doing the smart thing.

Something stupid… Here I come.

One More Spin is the second book in my One More Chance series, but can be read on its own. It includes second chance, forced proximity, gay for you/bisexual awakening tropes and no relationship angst. Steam runs high, but so does the sweetness. HEA is, as always, guaranteed.
