Author Chat With Andy: Guest Author, Nicky James

Welcome to another week of Author Chat with me. Today’s guest is none other than the very talented – Nicky James! She is one of the most intelligent and prolific authors in the M/M genre and I am honored to have her join us today as part of ACwA. Nicky writes mm romance novels that take place in fantastical, medieval type settings and loves to use the challenges of the times to give her stories and characters life. Nicky has also ventured into writing other sub genres of mm romance including contemporary, historical and Mythology. And here’s the best part! Today is, in fact, the release of her newest book in the Rail Riders series – End of the Line. This is Book One and I want to take this opportunity to congratulate her on this book release and would like to wish her much success with it.

Without further ado, let’s chat with Nicky!

ACwA Guest: Nicky James

How did the first story you ever wrote influence your career as an author and how do you feel about that story now?

Nicky: I consider my first book(s) like trial runs. It was like jumping in the deep end and not knowing how to swim. Everything I could have done wrong, I did wrong. Making a career as an author has come with a lot of ups and downs. There had been a huge learning curve. I still have a soft spot for the first characters I ever wrote, but I think if I wrote their story today it would be vastly different.

Which of your characters is most like you (or someone close to you.)

Nicky: I think there is a little of me in all, if not most, of my character. If I had to pick one, I’d say Zander from Trusting Tanner. He was modeled after me and depicts a huge obstacle I overcame in my life. His challenges were mine as well. We share a lot of personality traits, good and bad.

What is your favorite trope and why?

Nicky: I’m going to go with romantic suspense & mystery (if that’s a trope. Lol) I love an intricate and detailed plot with romance on the side. Bonus points if those people are opposites and annoy each other. So I guess some enemies to lovers too.

How many half-written stories are on your hard-drive and what do you plan to do with them?

Nicky: Half-written? One. There was two, but I’ve decided to conquer one of them and finish the story finally. Stories get half-written and left when I get stuck with a plot or have a major issue I can’t decided how to resolve. Sometimes putting a project in time out helps rejuvenate the brain. When I figure out the solution, I go back to them.

What are you working on next?

Nicky: I’m actually in the process of finishing one of those half-finished projects that had been in time out for about six months. It’s a romantic suspense plot. I stopped when I decided the characters weren’t connecting like I’d hoped. After letting it stew for a while, I figured out the issue and made the changes. Now it’s racing along.

Once I’m done with it, I’ll be working on book two for my Rail Rider series.

About Nicky

Hello! My name is Nicky James and I hear voices inside my head. They are the voices of the men I dream up who just want their stories to be heard. I dreamed of writing creative stories as a young child and knew there would come a day when I’d make that dream a reality.

I write MM romance novels in a variety of genres including contemporary, historical, and mild fantasy. I am a strong advocate for mental health and use my writing as a means to educate and bring awareness to misrepresented and often misunderstood disorders.

Every now and again, I dabble with elements of taboo, but look out, this isn’t for everyone and you may end up on a journey you didn’t quite expect.

I am married to a wonderful and supportive husband who is my biggest supporter, and I’m a mother to two adult boys and three fur babies. My addiction to coffee fuels me and keeps me motivated every day.
