My First Time: Kim Fielding

Thank you, Andy, for letting me stop by to talk about my first time! The timing is perfect because we’re closing in on the 8th anniversary of when I wrote my first novel.

I’ve been writing since… well, since forever. When I was two or three I’d make long rows of squiggles—picture lots of connected cursive e’s. I thought I was writing, although unfortunately I can’t remember what I was trying to record for posterity. I figured out the alphabet not long afterward, and by first grade I was authoring short stories. My creative writing continued as I grew older. Sometimes I wouldn’t produce much of it for a while, and sometimes I wrote a lot. But they were always short stories, and I never had the confidence to share them.

No matter who many stories I penned, I always held the conviction that I couldn’t possibly write a novel. Too long! Too hard!

Then I fell into the world of fanfiction. Well, one portion of that world anyway: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And hey, if you want to read 125 stories featuring Spike with just about every other male Buffy character, they’re still out there. I had a lot of fun with this and gained a lot of faith in my writing abilities. Something else happened too. I realized that some of my fanfics were over 100,000 words, which meant they were the equivalent of decent-sized novels. Maybe if I could write that many words of fanfic I could also manage an original piece.

As I was pondering this concept, I heard about National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), in which people attempt to write a short (50K) novel in a month. I decided to give it a shot.

The result was Stasis (which is actually over 60K). I originally self-published it, but DSP Publications later released arevised edition. It’s a story that had been bumping around in my head, about a reluctant wizard and a slave.

Having proved to myself that I was capable of writing a novel, I wrote another the following year—Flux, the sequel to Stasis. The year after that, the series became a trilogy. And on November 15, 2017, my 18th novel came out. Novels 19, 20, and 21 have already been written and contracted and will release in 2018, and I’m currently in various stages with three more. But it all began with my first, Stasis (which is also available on audio and in French!), which means that book will always have a special place in my heart.

Love is a high-stakes game.

A century and a half ago, Ante Novak died on a Croatian battlefield—and rose three days later as a vampire. Now he haunts Las Vegas, stealing blood and money from drunken gamblers and staying on the fringe of the powerful vampire organization known as the Shadows. His existence feels empty and meaningless until he meets beautiful Peter Gehrardi, who can influence others with his thoughts.

An attraction flares instantly, bringing a semblance of life to Ante’s dead heart. But the Shadows want Peter too, and they’re willing to kill to get him. As Ante and Peter flee, they learn more about themselves and each other, and they discover that the world is a stranger place than either of them imagined. With enemies at their heels and old mistakes coming back to exact a price, how can Ante and Peter find sanctuary?

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.

  1. I loved Stasis (and others now as well), but I didn’t know the history behind it. It’s interesting seeing how an author progresses and gains confidence in their craft, and look at all you’ve done now!

  2. Thank you for the post! I read the Ennek trilogy in its first incarnation and loved it. I think Stasis was my first m/m fantasy book (well, the first where the MCs were gay – read others where side characters were).

  3. Thank you for stopping by Kim. You been a great friend and wonderful colleague on many projects. I don’t think I knew about the Buffy fanfic start, but that’s really quite cool. When 21 comes out, you’ll be “legal” so to speak. Soon you can stop teaching if you want and be a full time story teller.

Thanks again for all the great stories you’ve given us and for many more to come.

    1. Thanks so much for inviting me, Andy! One of the biggest perks of becoming a writer has been becoming friends with people like you.
